The Apple store’s biggest advantage is sometimes also it’s biggest weakness. Being big often means options: having the most in stock, shorter wait times for help, and a wider range of experiences if you need multiple perspectives or opinions.
This benefit of bigness is lost when it becomes so popular the crowds become overwhelming. Everything gets sold out, lines form for even a quick question and it just plain becomes a hassle.
Tekserve is a New Yorker’s secret spot for all things Apple. As you can tell from the name, it’s vibe is more geek than chic. Which is a good thing. The people who work there really know their stuff. I’ve thrown numerous complicated and very opinion-based questions at them and I always get a well-thought out knowledgeable response. And they tend to have lower turn over than most, so you can get to know your specialist.
Best of all, when everyone else is having 3-7 week wait times for products there’s a decent chance they’ll have it in stock or be able to get it sooner.
Over the years the staff there has literally performed digital miracles for me. The latest is Charles (the guy in the photo above) not only talking me through my needs and giving me concrete answers (after my having spoken to numerous other non-Tekservers who just didn’t know) but he managed to get me the computer I wanted in less than an hour–when Apple’s website and all NYC Apple stores stated I’d wait at least 3-5 weeks. (Don’t even ask what BestBuy said for timing).
This is just the last in a long list of purchasing magic they have performed for me. Yes, including getting iPads, iPhones and other in-demand equipment for me ASAP against all odds.
Charles also happens to be professional, responsive, extremely proactive and modest.
Charles Tuason thanks for making my day!
PS They always give you this amazingly thick good quality tote bag that lays years and years when you buy a computer. It’s a fringe benefit but I love it! It shows they understand me as a customer and don’t waste the earth with plastic bags!
(NOTE: There is a brilliant saleswoman I do love at the 59th street Apple Store and when she’s working and Tekserve is closed she’s also my go to. I can’t give her name or photo because of Apple’s policy.)
